Abandonment Issues

Feelings of abandonment can run deep. Whether caused by the physical absence of a caregiver, emotional neglect, inconsistent parenting, or traumatic loss, the impact of abandonment—especially in childhood—can shape how we connect, trust, and feel about ourselves well into adulthood.

At the heart of many struggles with self-worth, anxiety, or difficulty in relationships lies a powerful and often unspoken fear: “Will I be left again?”

This is where abandonment issues counselling can help.

Abandonment – Whether emotional or physical—is recognized as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood and are known to have long-term effects on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical health. These experiences can include neglect, abuse, parental separation, or living with a caregiver who struggles with mental illness or substance use.

Children who experience abandonment often grow up feeling unsafe, unworthy, or afraid of forming close connections.

These early patterns can lead to:

  • Fear of rejection or being left
  • Trouble forming or maintaining healthy relationships
  • People-pleasing or codependent behaviours
  • Intense anxiety or emotional reactivity
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Low self-esteem or self-sabotage

Healing from abandonment doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right support, it is possible. Counselling gives you the tools to move from fear and instability to connection and self-assurance.

If you’ve experienced abandonment—whether recently or long ago—know that your pain is valid, and help is here. You don’t have to carry this alone. Together, we can begin the journey of healing and rebuilding.
